How late are the shops etc open on river street? Is this a good thing to do around 5 when all the tours are usually over? (We are not drinkers so bar scenes won't be important).

Shops tend to stay open late, as the foot traffic is heaviest in the evening hours. Might find they close early if the weather runs folks back to their hotels, etc.

If you are looking for something a little off the beaten path I would suggest the Crystal Beer Parlor (don't let the name throw you off, the food is excellent!) and the treylor park, again odd name but great food and excellent atmosphere. Enjoy your stay!
